We're 10 Pin Bowling this Thursday, meeting at Acock's Green Bowl at 7:30pm. We'll finish there at 10pm, and you'll need £8 and a Drill Top where you have one. (Please try and bring £8 in change, 'cause we won't randomly have a pile of £2 coins if everyone brings £10!). :-)

On Walking in the Dark

Firstly - well done to all those who went for, basically, surviving - 'cause it was, officially, 'king freezing! Those that took the tent for camping in the barn - sensible idea, undermined slightly only by your complete inability to remember that tent walls don't really stop sound too well... ...Like heading to Dorridge (East on one of those weird compass things), rather than Blythe Valley (West on one of those weird compass things). Not that important in the grand scheme of things for the Night Hike (other than we had the mickey taken out of us Quite A Lot). ...We HAVE to be better prepared for the Chase Walk. ... Getting lost isn't going to be viable - there's a lot of Cannock Chase and we can't have people wandering around without a scooby as to where they are. ...It's as close as mandatory as we can make it for those that haven't been on the Chase Walk - put it this way, if we don't have a decent turn out from Teams 52 and 63 in particular then we will pull the teams out of the Chase Walk. We're meeting at HQ at 0930 and will return there for about 1900. We'll be travelling up to Cannock Chase, and could do with some of the more experienced Explorers there to help us as well please.

Chase Walk

As revealed on a Facebook near you, the teams for the Chase Walk look like this: ...A JD for Williams to Weave ...Stop Taking the P*ss - We're Getting There ...During the event we'll be updating our Twitter feed, and the Chase Walk should be updating their website with team progress. Everyone will have a walker number - and that's the team number plus the letter shown above (so, for example, Jake will be 52A). We've got some rubbish start times, which is unfortunate. On the plus side, though, this does mean that we get a little more time in bed! We're hopeful that everyone should have enough time to get as far as they can - good luck! (*It made sense at the time!)

County Night Hike

Skiing / snowboarding went REALLY well, and everyone had just the most amazing time. However, it took a lot of organising, and a combination of that and trying to sort out the Chase Walk meant that we forgot to organise the Night Hike. For which the closing date was yesterday. ...However, we've been granted an extension (hurrah!). ...IF YOU WANT TO GO ON THE NIGHT HIKE YOU NEED TO COMPLETE THE ONLINE BOOKING BY WEDNESDAY NIGHT. The Night Hike is Saturday night 06 March, with a pick-up from Four Ashes at around 8am Sunday 07 March. The route itself is 13 miles, and there's food provided. ... There's also an Explorer Trophy, which we got close to winning last year - it would be nice to win it this year... Talk to Andy if you've any questions.

Thursday's Skiing & Snowboarding

We're back on track with the Programme (hurrah!), so we're skiing and snowboarding on Thursday! We're meeting at the Ackers at 7pm, and you'll need stuff to go on a ski slope with (clue — it's outside and high at the top. It's February — it's not going to be warm...). You need gloves — if you don't understand why, ask Scott... The fun and games will finish at 10pm. The cost is £6.50 (and please some of you bring change!) :-)

A quick note about the Comments. They're not used so much these days, as most abuse is directed at us via Facebook... :-) They are still useful occasionally though, so we had no plans to get rid of them - but the provider of the service has announced that they're about to shut up shop, so the Comments will be no more - at least until Andy has enough time to do something about it!

And we're back! Well, we are tomorrow, anyhow. After giving the matter careful consideration (of about 1 second), we've decided that we're NOT going to the park for a snowball fight - those that were there last year will understand why... However - what we are going to do is sort Bodies Revealed, set the dates for skiing and snowboarding at the Ackers, start thinking about the Chase Walk, reveal the latest about Monopoly Run Paris, have a chat about our Summer Camp thoughts. Oh - and we'll also possibly fit a couple of games in. And we promise that they won't include Sumo! We've got our New Year's resolutions after all... :-)

had the results back from the Six Dales competition, and they're pretty impressive... ...35 Miles in a time of 12 hours, 34 minutes. Male 13 - 19: Second Place ...Novice Trophy: FIRST PLACE - Won Trophy! ...23 Miles in a time of 10 hours, 37 minutes ...An absolutely awesome result by both teams! Certificates will be up at HQ tonight, we're still trying to sort the trophy for the Novice Trophy and get it down South. Congratulations to you all — you should be very proud of yourselves! We had a grand total of no-one drop out during the event, which is an amazing testament to the determination and effort put in by everyone.

The latest on it is that it's gone to the menders, and it looks like there's a hole in one of the pistons. This is somewhat of a pain, as it's going to need a whole new engine, at a cost of £4.5k! World Scout Jamboree 2011

Those that were born between 25 July 1993 and 27 July 2997 have only one chance to go to World Scout Jamboree - and it's in 2011 in Sweden. World Scout Jamborees come around every four years - and there are more countries represented at them than at the Olympics. They're an incredible experience - one that Andy, Nay, and 15 Explorers were fortunate enough to be able to experience in 2007. Read more about our experiences here - and do consider going. A reminder that Thursday's programme is the end of term BBQ, at which We Shall Stand in the Rain and Burn Food (the weather forecast for Thursday's seriously pants!). Notwithstanding that - we have a nice Scout HQ with a roof and very shiny new windows, so do come and join us. Parents and siblings are welcome, and can bring a drink if they want (that's more aimed at your parents that your 8 year-old sister just for the avoidance of doubt!). We shall also have the printed Activity Forms for Summer Camps Guernsey and Gower, and the final details for Summer Camp Gower, too. Understanding who's going would be a Good Thing for this... In terms of Summer Camp Guernsey, where we do actually know who's going WEEKS in advance (I feel like Harvey must feel over at Mallory!) - we've started to book activities. Details in the Summer Camp blog, obviously... And because it's the last night of the term, there is no uniform required. And have a think about next Thursday - do you guys want to do something or shall we stop meeting for the Summer?

Summer Camp Gower

We're now in the process of booking ferries for Summer Camp Guernsey, so - if your name's not down for that, it's probably a bit late. However, there are still some places left on Summer Camp Gower - and remember, you can join us for all or part of this! We're based at Silvercross Scout Campsite (as with Guernsey it has showers and similar mod-cons..!). We've stayed there before and the warden, Andy, is a fantastic guy and contributes to the very laid back feel to the place. Gower itself is a fantastic location for a Summer Camp, with an array of large and pretty much empty beaches on our doorstep. We haven't got as long as in Guernsey, and the budget's not quite as generous, but we're hoping to do some surfing and windsurfing, a ride in a powerboat, and a play with Power Kites. As well as all these, there'll be opportunities to have a play on the assault course on site for those that want to, and campfires stretching into the night... Those that have been before will attest that it's a great place to go. The cost of the week is £120, pro-rated down for those that can only go for part of the week.

And next week (such organisation!), we’re having a Wide Game, ‘cause the last one went so well. Only this time we’re meeting at the Red Lion Pub. in Earlswood at 7:30pm, arriving back there for 10pm. Uniform’s not required, but stuff for running around woods in will be. And a torch, too! :-)

WELL DONE to all those that took part in the Chase Walk. ...CP 2 Aspen Car Park 0803 4 3.3 mph ...CP 7 Walton on the Hill 1215 4 3.4 mph CP 8 The Hole Brocton 1310 4 2.1 mph ...CP 2 Aspen Car Park 0803 5 4.2 mph ...CP 7 Walton on the Hill 1140 5 4.5 mph ...A massive congratulations to all who took part - everyone who attempted the walk this year completed it, which is a first, and we had a team complete in daylight, which threw some of our organisation into disarray somewhat (apologies to all who helped on the Checkpoint for the lack of fuel for the generator for an hour or so after it got dark - oops). Congratulations also go to those members of Intrepid who took part in the junior Chase Walk (the winning team there had three members of Intrepid in!), those Scouts from Buckholt (who formed the rest of the winning team amongst others) and from Glyn who took part in the Junior Chase Walk (and who all completed it). Also mentioned in dispatches need to be the teams who completed the Chase Walk from Drake ESU (one of whom came second in The Rock Trophy), from Mallory ESU, from Simpson ESU, and the Leaders Teams from Buckholt and 6th Shirley.

If you’ve ever wanted to see the meaning of the phrase Shutting the Stable Door after the Horse has Bolted incarnate - tonight’s your chance; yup, we’re running the first tranche of the Self Defence course that we thought might be useful for people for some reason... As well as this, we’ll also be giving a (short!) Presentation of the Duke of Edinburgh Award work we’ve been doing behind the scenes with the Scout Association, signing up new people and signing off some of the existing participants, and there will be an opportunity to take part in Shrove ~~Tuesday~~ Thursday pancakes. They’ll also be details of the Years 9 & 10 Monopoly Run in London, more details for the Chase Walk, information about the Summer Camp on Guernsey, and breaking news about a possible climbing course for Year 13s in March. We’re also going to order the next lot of Explorer Drill Tops, so let us know tonight if you don’t have one. It really is the place where it’s all happening tonight! Normal time - WITH UNIFORM... ...There was a bit of a technical hitch with the Twitter feed, so the details didn’t get updated whilst we were away. Needless to say it was a fab. week and the snow conditions were great!

Obviously didn’t go according to plan. Apologies to everyone, and we’re going to take time out to review what happened, and what lessons we need to learn from it. I’ll be writing out to everyone’s parents with an update over the weekend, and there will be a parents’ meeting next Thursday for anyone who wants to come up and discuss. What is apparent, though, is that just about all the lads who were attacked were attacked because they’d gone to the help of younger Explorers. That is awesome, and is something that you all should be extremely proud of. It reflects rather better on you than on the gits in the Park that did this. If you do remember something, do give me a call and I’ll pass the information on to the Police. Thanks, Andy

So far we’ve had the skiing info. we need off Matt A (who cheated and got Joe to do it for him...), Nick B, Alex B, Scott G, Joe H, Liz K, Rhys W (who cheated and got Andy to do it for him...). Which means we need height / weight / shoe size / chosen activity ASAP from the following people (PLEASE - trying to organise this stuff is difficult enough without having to wait days for people to get around to replying!): ... - Jim C (you sent an email about boarding but no height / weight / shoe size info.!) ...PLEASE read them and let Andy know ASAP if there are any questions). ... There’s probably at least one occasion that everyone on the list has forgotten their Activity Form, but we can hope... We will need to go around to people’s houses to collect on the Saturday if Activity Forms are forgotten. This will make us late in Scotland and mean that we don’t have time for Dinner. ...This Friday’s session is at the Ackers, and we’re meeting there at 7pm. ...If your name’s not down, please let Andy know ASAP (spot a theme here?).

Right, we’ve sorted Thursday’s Programme - we’re meeting at Quasar Elite in Acock’s Green at 7:30pm on Thursday (unless your Nick B or Dan & Tom P, in which case just before 8pm if possible!). You’ll need £5 for the THREE games we’ve booked for you, and we suggest an additional £1 for a drink or something. And you’ll need to be collected from there at 9:30pm. You’ll also need your Hi-vis jacket from the Night Hike, though probably best not to wear it in the arena - we just want them back, please (along with all the other stuff you guys used...). We’ll travel up to Aviemore Saturday 14 February, and then ski / board Sunday thru’ Wednesday. ...IF people have been skiing or snowboarding before, AND they can demonstrate a level of competence, then they won’t need instruction - and the cost will be £260. For those that will need instruction, the cost will be an additional £100 on top of that. Apologies - it’s an expensive business - but the cost does include transport, accommodation (in a Youth Hostel), food, ski / board hire, four day lift passes, so this is as cheap as we can realistically make it. If you have your own skis / board, let Andy know, and we’ll see if can reduce the price further. There’s already limited availability at Aviemore Hostel on the Saturday night, so we need to move quickly. Consequently, those that want to go need to complete an on-line booking here by the start of Explorers on Thursday night. We’ll then be booking the accommodation Friday morning, so there won’t be any opportunities for late booking. In terms of the cost, please do talk to Andy if you want to spread the cost, as we do appreciate that there’s a slight lack of notice here...
